CLIFTON HEIGHTS, Pa. (WPVI) —

Upper Darby police shot and killed a knife-wielding man in Clifton Heights, Delaware County.

It happened around 7:10 p.m. Tuesday on the grounds of Bishop Hill Apartments located at 151 E. Bishop Avenue.

Police say they responded to the apartment community after receiving a call from the man who stated he was suicidal and dangerous.

Upon arrival, they were confronted by the man who was wielding a knife.

Officers attempted to deescalate the situation by talking to the man and then attempted to taze him.

However, police say that didn’t stop the man from moving towards them with the knife.

“Kept on coming towards the officers, and the Taser didn’t have any effect, and the two officers in fear of their life opened up,” Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

Officers shot the man, killing him.

The 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It seems the victim had significant mental health issues,” Chitwood said.

It’s not known at this time if the man lived at the complex.
